In the 1950s, carboxylated nitrile rubber (CNR), a type of oxygen elastomer, gained widespread attention in both domestic and international aerospace industries due to its resistance to strong oxidizing agents and low-temperature performance. In 1963, 3M in the U.S. synthesized nitrile monomers with carboxyl side chains; in 1964, they discovered that v-nitro perfluorobutyric acid could serve as a vulcanization point monomer for carboxylated nitrile fluororubber. Following this discovery, carboxylated nitrile fluororubber was applied in the propulsion systems and Apollo spacecraft's N204 storage tanks, delivery systems, interior walls, and high-pressure oxygen chambers.
